The gym can seem like an incredibly intimidating place to be, especially for beginners. It’s natural to feel nervous when you’re in a new environment, with new people and using equipment that might be new to you.
I’ve been a regular gym goer for years, but recently changed to a new facility. The equipment was different and the space was laid out in a different way, so the nerves started to creep back in.
However, there are ways you can feel more confident in the gym and get the most out of your workout…
Familiarise yourself with the equipment
It’s common to feel overwhelmed by the vast array of equipment and machines in the gym. You may feel scared to use a piece of equipment or worry about using it incorrectly. It’s important to familiarise yourself with the equipment in order to work out confidently and effectively. Watch some videos or ask a member of staff to demonstrate. Most gym equipment usually has a diagram on it to show the correct use.
Get the right clothing
Treating yourself to good-quality activewear and trainers can instantly give you the confidence boost you need to have an amazing workout. Gym clothes should be made from breathable, quick-dry, moisture-wicking fabrics to move trapped sweat and heat from the body to keep you cool and comfortable.
Have a plan
Going into the gym with a plan gives you a sense of purpose and naturally builds confidence. It will also make sure you don’t waste time wandering around thinking about what to do. You can use an app or a notebook to plan exactly what you will focus on and which pieces of equipment you will need.
Focus on yourself
Remember: everyone is focused on themselves and their own workout. No one is watching or judging you. Focus on yourself and don’t compare or compete with others. Ignore other people working out, keep your thoughts on your own goals and your own plan.
Try personal training
If you are still struggling with confidence in the gym, consider getting a personal trainer. They can advise on using equipment correctly, help you get the most out of your workout and support you in your fitness goals.
