Recharge your energy

As we head into winter with it’s darker mornings and evenings, it’s common to feel drained and low in energy. The lack of daylight has an effect on our bodies production of melatonin which is the hormone controlling our daily sleep-wake cycles. It becomes a struggle to find the energy and motivation on dark, gloomy days when it’s easier to hibernate indoors. In fact, new research by E.ON has revealed that 42% of Brits admit to having lower energy levels at this time of year and need a recharge.

It’s important to find ways to boost your energy levels and avoid the winter blues. Here are some of the ways that I recharge my batteries…

1. Take a nap

I’m a big fan of an afternoon nap, especially on the weekends when I’ve been up early to train. The ideal length for a nap is said to be 20-30 minutes, as any longer can leave you feeling groggy when you wake up.

2. Practice yoga

Yoga is another natural way to recharge your energy, particularly poses which involve backbends. Extending the spine opens the chest which allows you to breathe deeply which in turn increases mental alertness. Downward facing dog pose is also excellent for an energy boost as it brings blood flow to the brain. On dark, cold days I like to pretend I’m practising yoga in the warmth of Crete!

3. Read a book

Reading is a perfect escape from the stress of everyday life, it can even relax your body by lowering your heart rate and easing tension in your muscles. I personally, I like reading inspirational stories about endurance athletes- you can see some of my recommendations here and here.

4. Take a spa break

The ultimate way to relax, recharge and refresh has to be a spa break. In a survey by E.ON, surprisingly only 3% of Brits said a spa was their favourite place to relax, with the number one spot being at home. If you don’t have the budget for a spa, then you can create a luxurious spa experience at home with scented candles, beauty treatments and relaxing music.
